Codex MCP

An MCP server
for Codex, in one line.

How Codex talks to MCP servers: the codex mcp add command, the config.toml keys, tokens and timeouts. Then the one MCP server that grows an X or Reddit account from your own machine, with the exact line for Codex.

How Codex adds any MCP server

Two commands, one file, and the keys that matter.

Codex keeps MCP servers in ~/.codex/config.toml (or .codex/config.toml inside a project). codex mcp add writes that file for you; the IDE extension and the desktop app read the same one. codex mcp list, get, remove and login manage them, and /mcp in the TUI shows what connected.

  • Remote servers: --url plus the token's env var name, never the secret
  • Local servers: everything after -- is the command, --env for its variables
  • startup_timeout_sec 10 and tool_timeout_sec 60 by default; raise the second for real work
  • default_tools_approval_mode = "writes" asks only before tools that change something

Keys per OpenAI's Codex MCP docs. Same server in Claude Code? The setup guide covers both →

NotPeople on Codex

The X & Reddit MCP server, wired into Codex in four steps.

One hosted HTTP server. Codex gets the same tools Claude Code does; the sections below show them. Free tier reads; $49/mo posts.

  1. 1
    Get a key

    Request it below. It arrives by email from hello@notpeople.ai with this same install line.

  2. 2
    Export the key

    Codex stores the variable name, never the secret, so put the key in your shell profile.

    export NOTPEOPLE_KEY=np_…
  3. 3
    Add the server

    One line. Or paste the TOML into ~/.codex/config.toml; the longer tool timeout covers clips and feed scans.

    codex mcp add notpeople --url https://mcp.notpeople.ai/mcp --bearer-token-env-var NOTPEOPLE_KEY

    # or, in ~/.codex/config.toml
    [mcp_servers.notpeople]
    url = "https://mcp.notpeople.ai/mcp"
    bearer_token_env_var = "NOTPEOPLE_KEY"
    tool_timeout_sec = 300
    default_tools_approval_mode = "writes"
  4. 4
    Confirm, then set up

    Open Codex, type /mcp and look for notpeople. Then say set me up: the playbook installs the local agent, a Chromium profile, ffmpeg and yt-dlp.

Runs on your machine

Your account never leaves your browser.

Your agent thinks, the NotPeople MCP server remembers, and a small local agent clicks inside a Chromium profile on your laptop. It works the same on X (Twitter) and Reddit. Nothing runs on our servers against your account.

Playbooks

24 recipes. Your agent reads first, then executes.

Every multi-step job is a chain of tool calls. The playbook is the order and the fields — so nothing gets guessed. Override any recipe for your account with one memory note.
