How do I add an MCP server to Codex?

Two ways. From the terminal: codex mcp add --url https://… for a remote HTTP server, or codex mcp add -- [args] for a local stdio server. Or edit ~/.codex/config.toml and add an [mcp_servers. ] table with url (HTTP) or command and args (stdio). Codex reads the file at startup; type /mcp in the TUI to confirm the server connected.

Where is the Codex MCP config file?

~/.codex/config.toml for your user, or .codex/config.toml inside a project for project-scoped servers. The CLI, the IDE extension and the Codex desktop app all read the same file, so a server you add from the terminal shows up in the editor too.

Does Codex support remote (HTTP) MCP servers, or only stdio?

Both. Remote servers use the url key and speak streamable HTTP; local servers use command and args and talk over stdio. Remote servers that use OAuth are authorized with codex mcp login , which opens the browser flow once and stores the credential.

A tool call times out in Codex. What do I change?

Two keys per server in config.toml: startup_timeout_sec (default 10) for how long Codex waits for the server to come up, and tool_timeout_sec (default 60) for a single tool call. Servers that do real work, such as cutting a video clip or scanning a feed, need tool_timeout_sec raised; 300 is a safe value for the NotPeople server.

Can I stop Codex from asking before every tool call?

Per server, default_tools_approval_mode accepts auto, prompt, writes or approve. writes asks only for tools that change something, which is the sensible setting for a server that can post on your behalf: reads run, posting waits for you. You can also allow-list with enabled_tools or block with disabled_tools.

Does the NotPeople MCP work the same in Codex as in Claude Code?

Yes. It is one HTTP server; the client is whatever you talk to it from. Codex, Claude Code, Grok Build, Claude Desktop and Cursor all get the same tools: trend catalog and live search on X and Reddit, drafts in your voice, clips, weekly plans, creator circles, and the local node that posts from your browser. How Codex adds any MCP server

Two commands, one file, and the keys that matter.

Codex keeps MCP servers in ~/.codex/config.toml (or .codex/config.toml inside a project). codex mcp add writes that file for you; the IDE extension and the desktop app read the same one. codex mcp list, get, remove and login manage them, and /mcp in the TUI shows what connected.

Remote servers: --url plus the token's env var name, never the secret
Local servers: everything after -- is the command, --env for its variables
startup_timeout_sec 10 and tool_timeout_sec 60 by default; raise the second for real work

For HTTP servers, put the token in an environment variable and reference the variable name: codex mcp add <name> --url <url> --bearer-token-env-var MY_TOKEN, or bearer_token_env_var = "MY_TOKEN" in config.toml. Codex stores the variable name, not the secret. Custom headers go in http_headers, or env_http_headers when the value should come from an environment variable. For stdio servers, use --env KEY=VALUE or an [mcp_servers.<name>.env] table.
