Reposts hide behind the profile's Posts filter (pick All) or the Reposts tab; a quote is counted but the Quotes list is ranked and filtered. Screens and checks.
This morning a creator in the NotPeople network wrote to us: "Whenever I quote a post, my quote doesn't show up on the author's quote list. But it shows in my profile that I quoted that post, and it also adds to the number of people that quoted the post. If there are 15 people that quoted the post, on the list there will be 14. Mine will be missing."
Kai's reply was one line: use "All." That answer covers half of the problem, and the half it covers is the one most people are actually hitting since July. The other half is older and quieter. This piece walks both, with the screens.
The same question sits in r/Twitter every few weeks. "When I quote tweet someone it doesn't appear in that person's quotes," one poster wrote in April 2026; nobody could answer. Another, in July 2025, found that a quote missing from View Quotes on one account appeared when she opened the same list from a second account. And since July 2026 there is the version everyone is hitting: "I reposted, it isn't on my page." That one is a filter that ships switched on, not a penalty.
Why are my reposts and quotes missing from my profile on X? Because the profile no longer shows everything by default. Since mid-July 2026 the Posts tab has a filter (All, Posts, Highlights, plus a Sort by submenu) and it opens on "Posts," which hides plain reposts; on the mobile apps they sit in a separate Reposts tab. Switch the filter to All, or open the Reposts tab, and they are there. Your followers still get them in their Following feed. Why doesn't my quote show in the Quotes list under the post I quoted? Because that list is ranked and filtered while the counter is a raw total: quotes from protected accounts, from accounts blocked either way, and from accounts X has restricted are counted but not listed. The first is a setting; the second is worth a two-minute check for a restriction.
Open any profile on the web and look at the tab row: Posts with a small arrow, then Replies, Reposts, Media, Articles. The arrow is a menu. It offers All, Posts, Highlights, and a Sort by submenu, and the default is Posts, which means original posts and quote posts only. A visitor who does not touch the menu never sees a single plain repost on that profile.
The Posts tab is a filter with a default. "Posts" is checked when you land; "All" is one click away and almost nobody clicks it.
This is what "use All" meant. The reposts were there the whole time, one menu deep. On the mobile apps the same split is a Reposts tab next to Replies instead of a dropdown, which is why the question arrives in two flavors: web users say "the filter," app users say "the tab," and both are describing the July 17 profile redesign.
The other side of that redesign matters more than the menu: nothing changed in timelines. A repost still lands in the Following feed of everyone who follows you, and the repost arrow lights up on the original, which is the proof it went out. What changed is only what a visitor to your profile sees without clicking, and since almost nobody clicks, a share you wanted on your profile should now be a quote post with a line above it, because quotes stay under Posts.
The number under a post is a count of every quote ever made of it, minus deletions. X computes it once and shows it to everyone.
The list you open from that number (via the repost menu and "View post engagements," since the dedicated Quotes tab went away in 2024) is assembled for you, at that moment, out of quotes X has decided to show you. Three things are subtracted before the list is built.
Protected accounts. A quote from a private account is counted, and only that account's approved followers can see it. If two of the fifteen quoters are private, you see thirteen and the number says fifteen. This is the boring case and it explains most gaps on popular posts.
Blocks and mutes. Quotes from accounts you have blocked, or that have blocked you, are counted and not shown to you. The author of the post sees a different list than you do for the same reason. The Reddit poster who saw the missing quote from a second account was almost certainly looking at a block or a mute on the first one.
Visibility filtering. This is the case that matters for a creator. X's enforcement page lists, among the things it can do to a post short of removing it, restricting the post so it is visible only on the author's own profile. It also ranks every list of replies and quotes with a relevance score that includes the author's account health. A quote from an account under any of those restrictions is counted, appears on that account's profile, and is left out of, or buried under, the list the rest of X sees. That is exactly the symptom: your profile shows it, the number includes it, the list does not.
There is no fourth state where a quote exists and is not counted. If the number moved when you posted, X registered the quote. The question is only who gets to see it.
Do these in order. Each one rules something out.
1. Open the list logged out. Copy the post's URL, open it in a private window with no X session, and view the quotes. Logged out, there are no blocks and no mutes in play. If your quote appears here, the gap you saw earlier was a block or a mute on whichever account you were using. If it is still missing, move on.
2. Open it from a second account. A friend's account, or a spare of your own that has never interacted with the author. Same list, different viewer. If it appears here but not logged out, the logged-out view is just showing a shorter ranked slice, which happens on posts with hundreds of quotes. If it is missing here too, you are in the third case.
3. Check the account, not the post. A quote that only you can see is an account-level condition, so test the account. Search for one of your recent posts by its exact wording from a logged-out window. Open one of your recent replies under a busy post from the second account and see whether it sits in the visible replies or behind "show probable spam." Run the free X shadowban checker, which reads those same public signals for a handle in about a minute. If two of the three come back restricted, the missing quote is the least of it: the account's replies are being buried the same way, and the fix is the account, not the quote.

The restriction sits on the account, not on the quote; quotes are simply where people notice it first, because the counter hands them a number to compare against.
What sets it off, from the two thousand test accounts we ran into X's filters, is covered in the X shadowban and ban study: the biggest single trigger was a dormant account that suddenly bursts into activity, followed by reply spam patterns, link-heavy replies and reports. The recovery is slow and boring: stop whatever tripped it, post at a human pace from one device, keep replies on topic and link-free, and wait. Most soft restrictions clear inside a few days to two weeks once the behavior changes. Deleting and reposting the quote does nothing, because the quote was never the problem, and a burst of reposting is one of the patterns that got the account restricted in the first place.
If you run any automation on the account, the rules that keep it out of this state are in X automation without bans. The short version: one fingerprint, human gaps, no machine-speed reply runs.
Around July 17, 2026, X changed the profile layout in the mobile apps: Posts, Replies and Reposts became three tabs. The web app followed with the dropdown above. Both arrived without an announcement, and the effect looked like a shadowban: an account that reposts news all day suddenly had an empty-looking profile.
A month after the change people were still explaining it to each other in posts. This one got 5,872 views and 29 replies.
The r/Twitter thread about it ("why does it separate my retweets from my actual tweets") collected 91 upvotes and a long argument. On X itself, accounts started pinning instructions. One I saw this morning reads, in full caps, "CLICK on REPOSTS tab please TO SEE MY POSTS." Another, from a music page: "try to write something above, otherwise reposts go under the Reposts tab, and how many people bother looking there is a big question."
What actually changed, and what did not:
So the music page's instinct is the right one. If you want a share to sit on your profile where visitors see it, write a line above it and post it as a quote. A bare repost is now a timeline action, not a profile action.
Both confusions come from reading a list as if it were a count. The list is a ranking; the number is the count. If you want to know whether a quote or a repost did its job, look at the numbers that are not ranked: the counter on the original post, the views on your own quote, and the notifications on the other side.
This is also why the creator circles in the NotPeople MCP mark support as done only after the node confirms the reply or quote actually went out from the member's browser, not after it was requested. A list on X can hide a quote for four different reasons; a confirmed action on your own machine has only one meaning.

Why does the quote count not match the number of quotes I can see? The count includes private-account quotes, quotes from people you have blocked or who blocked you, and quotes from restricted accounts. The list you see removes all of those and then ranks the rest, so on a busy post it also stops well short of the total.
Is my quote missing because I am shadowbanned? Possibly, and it is the one case worth checking. If the quote is missing for everyone, logged out and from a second account, while your profile is public and shows it, the account is under a visibility restriction. Run the shadowban checker and look at whether your replies sit behind "show probable spam." If they do, the account needs the recovery steps, not the quote.
Why are my reposts not showing on my profile on X? Because the profile filters them out by default. Since mid-July 2026 the web profile's Posts tab has a dropdown (All, Posts, Highlights, Sort by) that opens on Posts, and the mobile apps put reposts in a separate Reposts tab. Pick All, or open the Reposts tab, and they are there. Your followers still see them in their Following feed, and the repost arrow on the original still lights up.
Do my followers still see my reposts? Yes. The change is to the profile page, not to timelines. A repost still reaches the Following feed of everyone who follows you and can still be picked up by For You.
How do I make a share show on my profile again? Quote it. Add a line above the post and publish it as a quote post; quotes stay in the Posts tab. A bare repost goes to the Reposts tab.
How do I see all the quotes of a post? Open the post, tap the repost icon, choose "View post engagements," then Quotes. You will still not see quotes from private accounts or from accounts blocked either way, and a very popular post shows a ranked slice rather than every quote. Logging out removes blocks and mutes from the picture, nothing else.
Can I switch my profile back to the combined feed? On the web, yes for yourself: pick All in the Posts dropdown. You cannot set it as the default that visitors see; every visitor lands on Posts. In the mobile apps there is no merge; reposts live in their own tab.
