X Premium costs $3, $8 or $40 a month. X documents one ranking change (a boost on replies), and the new Original Content Rewards program pays only subscribers. We compare the tiers, collect real before/after reports from Reddit and X, and run the payout math.
Is X Premium worth it? For most people who post to grow: yes, at the $8 tier, and no at the $40 tier unless you use Grok. X's own documentation promises exactly one ranking change for subscribers, a "slight preference" for your replies in conversations. It does not promise more reach on your posts, and the creators we found testing it report everything from "transformative" to "literally nothing". What Premium unlocks that you cannot get any other way is money: the new Original Content Rewards program (which replaced Creator Revenue Sharing on September 7, 2026) pays only subscribers, and only for views from other subscribers. Read the tiers, the reach reports and the payout math below, then decide with your own numbers. If your account is already throttled, no tier fixes that; run the shadowban checker first.
Jason W has been monetized on X "almost since the beginning of monetization". On August 8 he posted the help-center link for the new program and this: "Now all of a sudden I have to qualify all over again. For me, I don't think X premium is worth it unless monetization offsets the cost." (source)
That is the whole question, asked by someone who has been paying for years. Premium costs money every month. The features are mostly cosmetic. The one thing that turns the subscription from an expense into an investment, payouts, just got a new gate: 500,000 impressions from verified users in 90 days, replies excluded.
So the honest way to answer "should I buy Premium" in 2026 is to split it into three smaller questions. What does each tier actually change? Does it move reach? And can it pay for itself?
X has three consumer tiers. Prices below are the web prices X lists on its Premium help page; app-store prices run higher, and X quotes "localized pricing", so your screen may differ.

Three things in that table matter more than the rest.
Basic gets you the writing tools (edit, long posts, long video) but no checkmark and no payouts. Premium is the first tier that can earn. Premium+ adds nothing to your reach or your payouts on paper; it adds Grok, an ad-free feed, Articles and the largest reply boost.
That last row is where the $32 a month difference lives. If you want Grok, Premium+ is cheaper than buying SuperGrok separately, a point Mark Kretschmann made in March when people were confused about what the tier includes. If you don't, you are paying $384 a year for fewer ads and bigger reply placement.
There is no free trial. Subscriptions are non-refundable, including when the account gets suspended. Cancelling stops the next charge but does not refund the current period. All of that is stated on X's help page, and it comes up in the reviews below more than you'd expect.
X publishes one sentence on how subscription affects ranking: people "will see a slight preference for replies from verified accounts over other replies", and X is "currently testing the levels at which we prioritize content from Premium subscribers relative to the other factors".
Replies. Not posts.
That matches what people notice first. A new subscriber on r/Twitter, who runs a writing business, listed the boost as the thing they liked most: "What I love the most about the Premium feature is that my replies go to the top." (thread) A reply in a February thread put the other half plainly: "X premium doesn't help in getting impressions on posts. The reply boost is for replies." (thread)
If your growth strategy runs on replies, and for small accounts it should (we wrote up why in reply-led X growth), the boost is real and it is the cheapest lever X sells. If your strategy is posting into the void and hoping, Premium does not change the void.
We went through the last year of "is X Premium worth it" threads on Reddit and X and pulled every account that gave numbers or a clear before/after. Nobody ran a controlled test; treat these as field reports, not a study.

Read across the table and a pattern shows. The people who say Premium "works" are almost always describing replies, the checkmark's effect on trust, or an account that was already getting engagement. The people who say it did nothing were hoping it would push posts that weren't getting engagement on their own. A marketer in r/DigitalMarketing summarized it two weeks ago: "Premium primarily enhances posts that are already receiving interaction, so from a small account, I wouldn't anticipate much beyond the increase in replies." That is consistent with X's documentation. Our read across the 160 creators in the NotPeople network is the same: the checkmark is table stakes for a working account, the reply boost is worth $8, and the accounts that grow are the ones that post something worth replying to. Paul Mit got 155 replies in March for saying "X without Premium is just a toy" (post).
This is the part of the decision that changed this month, and it is the only part where Premium is not optional.
Creator Revenue Sharing stopped taking new members on August 7, 2026 and shut down on September 7. Its replacement, Original Content Rewards, started rolling out applications on September 8. The rules, from X's help page:
Two consequences follow.
First, the old bar was 5 million organic impressions in three months, any viewer. The new bar is 500,000, but only from verified viewers, and replies don't count. For a reply-led account that is a harder number than it looks: your replies are the boosted thing, and they are the thing that doesn't count toward eligibility.
Second, the economics of the payout are now openly about the other subscribers. X's own DogeDesigner account said it in January, before the program was renamed: payouts come from "real views from Premium users who see your posts in their Home feed. Encourage your followers to get X Premium." (post) Your audience's subscription rate is now part of your income.
We looked at this from the other side earlier this year. In a teardown of 13 AI and crypto creators against their actual August payouts, one variable reproduced the payout order almost exactly: impressions on original posts in a monetizable topic. Once impressions were known, follower count added nothing (correlation with the residual: +0.004). Entertainment views were worth nothing. The single post type that manufactured qualifying impressions at volume was an Article link post, at roughly 10 times an account's average post, and the top 10% of posts produced about 70% of the impressions that paid. (The numbers are ours; the accounts are not named.)
Put the two together and the payout side of the question is answerable. Premium is worth it for earning if you can produce original posts, not replies, that verified people read, in a topic advertisers buy against. That is a content problem, and $8 a month buys you the right to be paid for solving it. It does not solve it.
Three things people buy it for that it does not deliver.
It does not protect the account. X's refund policy says it out loud: subscriptions are non-refundable "including subscriptions linked to X accounts that have been suspended". On r/Twitter this year one user was "suspended without explanation, and they did not refund my annual subscription"; another paid on a Monday and was suspended by Saturday, still billed. In our own ban study across roughly 2,000 test accounts, what killed accounts was behavior (dormant-then-burst activity, wrong location, automation fingerprints), and a checkmark changed none of it. If you are already suspended, the appeal guide is the page you need, not the Premium page.
It does not lift a shadowban. A throttled account with Premium is a throttled account with a checkmark. Reach comes back when X's search and reply signals come back, which takes real engagement from real accounts. Check where you stand with the shadowban checker; if the verdict is a search ban or reply deboost, the page tells you what usually fixes it.
It does not bring followers. The checkmark was worth something as a trust signal in 2022. In 2026 the r/Twitter reflex is the opposite: a comment praising Premium's "transformative" effect got downvoted, and the thread went looking for bots in the poster's followers. The creators earning real money in our network got their followers from posts, not from the badge.

One practical note on long posts. Every tier can write 25,000 characters, but the timeline still collapses long posts after the first 280 and hides the rest behind "Show more". If you're paying for long posts, put the hook before the fold; the X post preview shows exactly where the cut lands.
Buy Premium, not Premium+, and treat it as the entry fee for two things: replies that get seen, and the option to be paid.
Then spend the effort where the reach is. Reply into threads that are already moving, daily, at a human pace. Post original takes in one topic, because the payout math rewards topic and originality and ignores follower count. Learn the Article format if you're chasing the 500,000-verified-impressions gate; it is the format that produced the biggest qualifying numbers in every account we studied.

Can I make money on X without Premium? Not through X's own program. Original Content Rewards requires Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business, 500 verified followers and 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in 90 days. Brand deals don't require Premium at all.
Does Premium+ pay more than Premium? No. Both tiers are eligible for the same program, and the payout is computed from qualified impressions on your content, not from your own tier. Viewers on Premium+ may count for slightly more than viewers on Basic, but that is about who reads you, not what you pay.
Does X Premium protect me from bans or shadowbans? No. Subscriptions are non-refundable even when the account is suspended, and a checkmark does not change the behavior signals that trigger enforcement. Check your status with the shadowban checker before paying for anything.
Is there a free trial? No. X's help page says it is not offering trials, and all subscriptions are non-refundable. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid the next charge; the checkmark stays until the paid period ends.
Is Basic enough to get the blue checkmark? No. Basic includes edit, long posts, long video and reply prioritization, but the checkmark and payouts start at Premium.
